Chapter Two is Up!

The print form is up and can be found in the Acrobat file of Chapter 2.

The Chapter is in two forms - Acrobat (.pdf) and Rich-Text (.rtf). If you do not have Acrobat, use Rich-Text and it should open on the default text editor (PC or Mac).

Chapter One - Tenative Design

This is a pdf file (for Acrobat Reader). If you need to read these in another document type, write me and i'll take care of it. Hopefully the design doesn't look too awful, and things are interesting.

If there are any problems with editing, please write me (i'm slightly untrustworthy with this much sleep deprivation)...

i'm getting really excited and hopefully we'll combine Miguel's illustration(s) into the print form soon.

as for the strange dimensions, i'm shooting for DIY aesthetic, cutting an 8 1/2 x 11 into half (hotdog style), so they'll be folded pages (thereby making it smaller/more intimate). If this doesn't appear to be a good idea, tell me, please. i want to see random comments up here as often as possible. community...muhahah!

the slate at the writing area has been cleaned - feel free to begin the next chapter however y'all like.

May 11th note: i'm designing the first chapter tonight and should be up tomorrow. i think i'm going to clear the last entry and let someone start from however they want. i really like the end of chapter one...

Chapter One Entries finish on Tuesday!

Hope this has been good so far - feel free to comment below on writing experiences.

The first week looks very intruiging and I should have the complete text together by either wednesday or thursday. Hopefully with illustrations, too (GO MIGUEL!).

The first entry was written by the wonderful new media guru (and Northwestern Professor) Ann Weinstone and starts the work off with a nice sci-fi tinge. I attached the entry to the bottom of this email so we all have the same starting point.

1 opens her eyes. Light moves in darkness as if fingers pressed hard against lids. No visual. She rolls over and growls “Har-ee!”, hating the way her morning voice sounds. Hating his ridiculous name. A short pause. Distant cocktail music, muffled conversation. She speaks before he does. “You were supposed to transfer my fee.”

“Oops,” he answers, slurrishly.

“Visnet cut me off.”

“Double oops.”

“Fix it,” she says and exits.

She lies on her back, observing her breath relax to normal. Her pulse stabilizes at 72 beat per minute.

Behind closed lids, a heliotropic satellite and the message: Welcome Back to Visnet!

She opens her eyes for the second time.

Morning becomes electric. 1 grins. Real Life in Technicolor. What could be better?

A Short Description/Email sent to potential writers

During the month of May and into June, I'd like to write a novel. A short novel, but still a novel and I need all of you to help me. I'm a slow writer so I've decided to write a book with as many people as I possibly can. Essentially, I'm beginning a exquisite corpse blognovel (for information on 'exquisite corpse').

My hope is that I can get a group of 10-15 people, who write blog entries (between 150 - 450 words) that will accumulate into a larger work. The system will let writers see only the last entry and must write from that. At the end of each week, I will have an animator (Miguel Jiron presently) draw illustrations to our favorite moments of the entries and we will publish all entries along with illustrations as chapters. Hopefully, this project will run at least four weeks (and I'm willing to maintain it, if so desired).

This is a project that should be an "interactive narrative" - a narrative that will be formed by you (the writers). And the work is totally catered to what you want to make it. I would like to emphasize that this writing experience will hopefully excite you more than another obligation. I encourage experimentation in form and content as much as possible.
